This Month's How-To: Winter Pruning Winter Pruning (aka: dormant pruning) is beneficial to plantings in many different ways. By removing weak or parallel branches in winter it is easier to see the trees structure as a whole. Another benefit is the reduced risk of spreading disease as opposed to summer pruning. It is important to realize that when pruning, you are creating an open wound in the tree which is susceptible to disease from fungal spores. Most of these diseases are not active during the winter months. One final advantage of pruning while the tree or shrub is dormant is an increased growth rate in the spring. By trimming off suckers, parallel branches, and branches that are not visually appealing, you can focus the trees growth in the existing healthy branches. |
